Plastic Pollution

Scale of the issue

Since it’s invention, the useful material plastic has increasingly become an epidemic for the environment and in the past 50 years alone, plastic production has doubled. Whilst unaware of the issues we have mindlessly created endless uses and applications and until only recently with rise of awareness campaigns like Blue Planet II, single use plastics have become one of biggest problems we face. Now, countries and cities globally are banning plastic use in many ways and the call for the end of single-use plastics is rising with tremendous momentum (and has even been made illegal in some places) and we couldn’t be happier about this. The impact plastics are having on wildlife is like nothing we could have imagined.

Impact on wildlife

Around the world, nearly 2 million plastic bags are being used every minute and its estimated between 500 billion and 1 trillion annually. At Trivia Battle, plastic bags in the office are banned, in addition every new starter is issued with a reusable drawstring bag made of natural fibres as part of their welcome pack. Stopping the use of plastic bags is something we are passionate about; the average plastic bag is used for 12 minutes but takes nearly 1000 years to decompose, and this is not acceptable.

Our stance on bottles

Right now, 1 million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute (1.44 Billion per day); this figure has risen drastically in the past decade and if we are not careful it will keep rising. To make matters even worse, as of 2016, half were recycled - with only 7% of those collected turned into new bottles. At Trivia Battle, plastic bottles in the office are banned, in addition every new starter is issued with a reusable sustainable bottle as part of their welcome pack. In addition, we provide multiple types of recycling bins and generic waste bins do not exist here.

Climate Change

The Snowball Effect

Global warming is a phenomenon on the tips of everyone’s tongues, whether they believe in it or not. Scientists attribute the global warming trend observed since the mid-20th century to the human expansion of the “greenhouse effect” - warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth towards space. Many people believe that CO2 is the only influencer on global warming but there are several gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect including, water vapour, Nitrous Oxide and Methane.

Human Impact

Human activities are changing the natural greenhouse. Over the last century the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). This happens because the coal or oil burning process combines carbon with oxygen in the air to make CO2. In One year, the world emits 33 billion tons of CO2 and by 2030, our emission of CO2 could rise to 40 billion tons.

Our mission

At Trivia Battle this is a matter we take very seriously and it is our aim to become carbon neutral by 2023 and by 2030 we aim to provide 10 times our annual energy usage in renewable power back to the grid. In addition at every financial milestone we hit, we aim to buy a substantial amount of land and plant forests that will never be built upon as our way of saving the natural landscape. In addition to forests, we will also support the redevelopment of the UK's wetlands. Whilst peatlands, a type of wetland, only cover 3% of the total land surface on earth, they contain 550Gt of carbon – which is twice as much as all of the world’s forest biomass combined [1].

Giving back to the community

Corporate Giving

There are a number of fantastic charities around the world that do things are are truly changing the world for the better. At Trivia Battle we promise that 10% of our profit will go to the causes we feel add the most value to society. The idea that what we do on a daily basis is helping fund these causes gives us that extra determination to make Trivia Battle a global phenomenon. We don’t need to do this as many companies such as lotteries are required to do, we want to. Our users playing the game can feel good in the knowledge that whether they are successful or not, they are changing lives around the world.

Social Activity

At Trivia Battle, giving back to the community is at the heart of all the people who work here. We offer our staff paid time off to work on a number of volunteering projects focused around helping people and making the world a better place. We are real eco warriors at Trivia Battle and we endeavour to help the environment and the wildlife we share this planet with. We run an incentive of planting new trees and forests and this is a project the whole company is involved in and we look to expand worldwide. Our People

Our Culture

Our people are the core of our business and that is why we are passionate about developing our people to be the best they can be. At Trivia Battle we are looking to develop people from junior positions to become the future leaders of our company; that is why we have implemented a initiative where we don’t really look for senior candidates to take senior positions here, we want raw talent that can be moulded into exactly what we are looking for. For this reason exactly the sky is the limit, every position that is above entry level will be filled by someone internally to take the next step in their careers, some companies may see this as a maverick way of doing things, but it’s what we are about and what we will continue to do no matter what. Every new starter will have the opportunity to one day become a senior manager and that is what is so unique about Trivia Battle.
